Any Diabetics *Type 1 or Type 2* using some supplements?

Postby ArthurVictory on Mon Sep 06, 2010 6:23 am

Hey everyone,

I tried to refrain from asking but just decided to give in and try my luck!

I have read from Diabetes Health website and other diabetes related web pages that Protein Powders and Creatine are OK to take, *just to take a smaller dosage on Creatine loading and maintenance phases*.

But wanted to see if what my fellow diabetic bodybuilders were possibly taking?

Thanks,
Arthur :?: :?:

Cameback to the forums just today and saw your post. I think if we were able to post this info into a more steady thread for Mark's Diabetic friends it could help us ALL out. I have yet to see info tieing into supplements and other things for diabetic bodybuilders. Do you take creatine as well? I hear so many mixed things about it for us. I am type 2 as well. I wake up and usually around 105, usually around 2nd meal I am down to 85-90, lunch I get to around 75-80, third meal same as second meal, supper is hard so I tend to get REALLY low, lowest I ever got before supper was 62. 5th meal I am around 100 and at night before hitting the bed I am at 100 or so again. Wake up and repeat. I am 30 and still on the pills. I take one metformin 500mg and Extended release Glipizide 5mg all in the morning and lasts me all day.

I think the glipizide gets me too low but not too sure.

Only supplements I take are a diabetic vitamin pack, and whey protein with L-Glutamine already in it *from walmart, I goto college so dont have much money*, after workout and before I goto sleep. I never take fish oil because I work at Ikea and eat the Salmon they serve there *mmmmm that stuff is good* it is a stuffed salmon with veggie medallions and carrots.

The numbers are staggering for diabedics....the experts say 50% population in the USA will be diabedic by 2020....some spooky stuff
to answer your Q no I dont take any creatine "yet" have been reading about it I can recall that it was the "in" thing to take as a sup back in the day.
given the numbers seems like there would be more info on weight training and dibedic benefit

I do find SOME info but they never get in too much depth about bodybuilding and diabetes. Just basically runs through the whole thing what diabetes is and I get like 'DUH!' and I want info on how it effects us on building muscle. So far with my own progress I think it is turning out nicely.

But your right dude on the whole diabetic thing with our own population, it is sad and when I got it I never thought much about besides to make sure to take my pills. Well 12 years later *was 18 when I got diabetes* I just got hit in the head and was like i want to live my whole full life so started working out. Diabetes can be a genetic thing but I think it can be broken if we just teach our younger generation to be active. But I am jumping on the creatine thing here. Bought a basic muscle building stack which consist of Whey Protein, L-Glutamine, Creatine and a multi-vitamin. Even though the whey protein I do have has a recovery mix in it already with Taurine, Glutamine, and Creatine, just feel like they should be taking separately from the whey protein.

still undecided on regular whey protein or whey protein isolate.....your thoughts?

Yes please do let me know what the doctor tells you! My doctor said it was ok for me to take the Whey mixes just doesn't want me to rely on them haha. I saw him today and he said I was doing great! A1c is at 5.9 *still would like it to be lower, for personal happines*. Blood pressure was normal as well so took me off my HBP meds *was really happy about that*. Noticed I gained weight and told him I was slightly worried about it but explained to him I was still wearing the same size 38 pants I dropped down to and he said I had gained muscle mass. I was at the doctor last time at 228*half or more a year ago I last weighed* now I am 247lbs. People still say I look thinner so I think I am on the right track lol.

was at the doc yesterday, A-1c 5.8 all the other numbers are good ( normal, first time anyone told me I was normal LOL)
asked about the sups he said I was good to go but not to just depend on them, he is old school and goes with what works if its not
broken dont fix it...weight has settled at 225 and im down from 268 waste is 36 from 44 body mass has increased not fat anymore
and doc commented he wanted to know just what the hell ive been doing when he first saw me, being in the health care field I have a diffrent
relationship with my doc, he asked me to come back in 30 days and will repeat the blood work to check for me

Sounds good man!! Working out keeps our A1c at normal levels and as long as my doctor is happy then I am happy. I think when I see him again in 3 months I will just ask him about creatine. The supplement protein drink I use HAS a recovery mix in it but feel like it is not really beneficial really or a good quality whey protein. But being a college student with a limited budget I get what I can afford. Going to try the Whey isolate Mark recommends and get creatine and Glutamine separately as well. I have a nice little nutritiondepot down the street that matches all internet prices. oh yeah also a good multi vitamin. I heard that Sports One a Day is a good OTC multi vitamin...any truth on that?
