Most people say to cycle creatine; e.g: 6 weeks on, 2 weeks off, or some variation of that. This is because it's possible the body will stop producing it's own creatine if you always supplement with it - but then again, there's no studies that have proven that happens, so you don't have to. But better safe than sorry in my book :) It also makes it a thrill when you load back up on creatine and suddenly go up 2-3 reps higher than you were before. So to answer your question, rest week is a decent time to take a break if that's what you decide to do, but not absolutely necessary if you don't want to go through a creatine loading cycle again.

I'd continue glutamine if I was you; it seems to be a pretty good thing all around (I just received a 16lb shipment of it today - :D ). Helps you sleep, helps you recover during the week off, etc.

One caution: if you're taking both, careful not to take them at the same time. When they're taken at the same time, a lot of research shows they compete for absorption essentially; so your body will either ignore the creatine and take the glutamine, or vice versa, or just forget about both. I think if you take l-glutamine on an empty stomach an hour or so before creatine, or creatine an hour or so before glutamine, you're alright. I personally use creatine before a workout and glutamine after a workout with my protein shake.

?? That seems to go directly against what Mark says in TSPA about the post workout shake.
He says take 50g protein, 5g creatine and 5g glutamine right after your workouts.

It's confusing, along with the rest of bodybuilding, and there might not be a right answer for all people. There's enough out on Google about creatine and glutamine competing when taken together that it seems worth not taking them together; and from personal experience, I felt the creatine a lot more when I stopped mixing it with the glutamine. It's hard to say though, because some studies show it happens, some can't seem to... who knows, at this point.

The reason I take creatine after a workout is because I generally take caffeine and glutamine right before my workout, and the caffeine+creatine is almost always a bad combination. Granted, the caffeine is still in my bloodstream after the workout, so it might be just as disastrous.

Another reason is that currently I'm experimenting with how much glutamine affects my workout; I've heard that taking it before a workout can give you quite a pump and make you a bit stronger, like creatine, so I'm experimenting. Still, glutamine is supposed to be very effective after a workout and help with glycogen storage and healing - so hey, do what works for you :)

Hi,

I take 1 teaspoon after I lift, but should I also be at some point on the days I don't lift? I've been using L-glutamine powder for 3-4 days now, 3 times a day. Before breakfast, right after a workout with my shake, and before my last meal of the night. I have not noticed anything in the gym yet in terms of recovery, but what I have noticed is improved sleep. I have slept like a rock the last 3-4 nights since I started using it. Perhaps its forcing me into the repair and recovery process by helping me sleep more.
