Nutella and the Homemade Protein Bar

Postby pggylb on Mon Mar 29, 2010 10:37 pm

Hello all,

Brand new; just joined minutes ago. Got a question.

I am looking for a good homemade protein bar recipe. I found Mark's post that includes just 3 ingredients: hazelnut butter, protein powder, and heavy cream. I am in the USA and we have what's called Nutella, which is a hazelnut spread. My question is for anyone who would know the answer, can I substitute the Nutella for the nut butter?

Note: I am brand new at all this. I'm learning about nutrition and how to count cals, carbs, and protein and I am new at work out routines. So, please bare with me and my idiocy.

Thank you,
Peggy

The problem with Nutella is that it is more sugar than anything else.

Your Nutella protein bar would end up with the same amount of sugar as a Snickers bar. Not the way I would go if you were looking to trim fat.

I would just go with natural peanut butter instead, the only reason Mark used hazelnut butter was because the kind he can get is low in carbs and Nutella definitely is not.

Thank you, surferx. The answer I was looking for.

Would there anything else I can use also besides just PB that is high in protein? Do you know of any nut butters that are available in the US and where they could be found?

I found a website where hazelnut butter could be purchased in Illinois. The site is called Futters Nut Butter. Would this be recommendable? It says all butters are single-ingredient.

Futters is good, as you can see from their nutrition facts they do not contain any significant amount of sugar and are natural. I have also seen almond butter locally in regular chain grocery stores but I wasn't personally fond of the taste.

How about soy nut butter? It's lower in carbs than PB and I think it's higher in protein too. Taste takes some getting used to, but I was able to find "I. M. Healthy" brand at my local grocery store that doesn't have added sugars. HTH.
