1 - Can anyone say (with authority) whether the whey protein in protein bars is as good as the whey protein in protein powder? In other words, does it matter where my whey protein comes from if I'm eating the same amount?
2 - Also, how do protein powders stack up compared to natural sources of protein (i.e. meat, eggs, poultry, etc)? Can one still grow if he's doing a lot of powders & bars (though still eating meat, eggs, etc)?
Protein is protein regardless of the source. Once your body breaks it down and it enters the blood stream its amino acids and your cells could care less if it came from chicken, egg, steak, whey, or cottage cheese.
A word of caution on the protein bars. Most are very expensive and are dressed up candy bars with added protein.
There is a growing movement called IIFYM which stands for
if it fits your macro's. Basically it says you can eat anything you want as long as it fits into your macro's for the day.
Here is a link to some competative bodybuilders who are logging their experience with IIFYM
