Glycemic Load per servings

Postby stickupkid on Thu Mar 25, 2010 10:26 pm

I have a question when calculating Glycemic Load points per food serving. Is that serving cooked I ask because a 75g serving of Wholegrain Rice weighs 195g when cooked. Certain GL site only mention weight but never is it cooked?

yes, depends on how you found it in the GI database, but is usually raw, and see the net carbs that has that food in a database, and thats how you calculate them

so if a raw 150g Quinoa and then boiled = 8 GLs if I divide the GL 8 by the serving 150 and mulyiply by 100 for the serving I want the GL would be 5.33 points?

you have to divide GI/100 and then multiply it by the amount of net carbs that are on your desired serving,..

Yes you are right most are based on GL's representing grams given by certain table charts. So if 150g Quinoa = 8 GLs you can divide that 8 by that serving 150g which when multiplied to your choosen gram serving you will have your GL number for that serving. Its like if you wanted 75g you would half the GL so that would be 4 GL's or you could do the following example 8 / 150 x 75 = 4 GL's

Thanks for help guys ;) I have just cooked 90 grams of raw pasta which on a GL gives 8-9 points but when cooked it weighs 195, which looks too much for a 8-9 GL serving it nearly fills the whole plate, looking at it makes me feel fat. I think all rice and pasta GL servings must mean from boiled. What do you guys think.

As far as I'm aware the nutrition facts measure pasta as it is raw. Since more pasta doesn't magically materialize when you cook it, just look at how many servings the package is supposed to have and weigh it raw to find out if it adds up properly. If you come out with less servings than advertised in the package, you know they are taking into account water weight in the serving size.
