Is GLAD better than MANS for bulking?

Postby lburnham on Thu Jun 25, 2009 11:22 am

I'm getting a bit bored on MANS and my progress is slowing.
Does anyone know if GLAD is a better bulking diet?
And can I eat weetabix on the GLAD diet?
It's a great thing when you realise you still have the ability to suprise yourself

It's better for putting on more fat at the same time you're putting on muscle.

Weetabix has a pretty high glycemic index. I think there is another product called Oatibix (regular, not bite-size) that has a slightly lower GI. However, there really is no commercial cold cereal that is truly appropriate. Fiber One is OK, but oatmeal (non-instant) is much better. Whatever you do, I suggest having cereals with a substantial serving of protein. I had spinach-scrambled egg whites and cheese with some steel-cut oats and two slices of Ezekiel 4:9 raisin toast this morning, and it's really sticking with me well. The GLAD diet is more flexible, it's true, but it does require you to be more vigilant and careful about keeping track of what you eat and making nutrition-maximizing choices. With great power comes great responsibility. ;)

Somewhere on http://musclehack.com I read something by Mark that said after the summer and his cutting cycle, he was going on GLAD to bulk. Which struck me as odd, since I thought MANS was the main bulking one... I'm thinking of switching over as well though, because MANS is making a girl of me :(

What really bugs me with the two diets, GLADS and MANS is the protein intake. Mark states on MANS protein intake is your LBM x 2.75 but on GLADS it's 30% of your diet so why is the protein higher on the GLADS? Also I was talking to somebdy who is now on the anabolic diet and he was making great gains he mention the MANS diet didn,t work for him as the protein intake is to lean. I haven't seen to many happy faces on the MANS diet, but I haven't tried it yet so for me cant give any real insight.

Because on the GLAD diet you're not worried about the gluconeogenesis from excess protein the way you are on MANS. If you over-eat protein on MANS, you're ultimately going to end up with more insulin produced to deal with the extra glucose, and you'll be storing fat instead of burning fat and building muscle.

I think it depends on how many calories you eat too. I'm eating GLAD right now, which has a formula for how many calories to eat. MANS doesn't. So, if you're eating fewer calories on GLAD than on MANS, your 30% of calories from protein may be less than your protein requirements. So I just ignore the percentage then and eat how much protein I know I need while staying within my calorie allotment for the day. Eating less carbohydrate isn't going to hurt me, as long as I get enough to meet my serotonin-production needs.

Or maybe I eat a lot of calories one day because I splurged on a special meal out, and I still eat exactly my protein requirement. Naturally, my protein percentage will be less than 30%. As Matt B. says, it's my average nutritional habits that dictate my results, not what happens at one meal or even one day. I don't sweat it, because it's all going to even out in the end.

All thou the above makes logic marks diet the MANS diet is really based on the Aanabolic diet and tweaked. Now I know people who have been on the anabolic diet for 6 months and have made some great gains in muscle while keeping pretty lean not ripped but pretty lean. Now the protein followed by the anabolic diet is around 30% or more thats alot more protein than the MANS diet and works for alot of people. So I gess the best judgement is to try both and see what gains can be made. Like I was only on the anabolic diet for 4 weeks maintenace, than the TSPA, but once I get back to bulking might give both a try a couple of months to see what suites me.

A key difference is that on GLAD, you'll appear to have an extra 3-10 lbs of lean weight that you lose & gain & lose again on MANS. I think one overlooked benefit of GLAD is that since your glycogen stores and water weight remain much more constant, it's easier to monitor your results.

I've been playing around with eating a bit higher carb in the evening prior to my workout while skipping a carb-up on the weekends, and it's very much stabilized my day-to-day lean weight fluctuations. There's something to be said for ease of monitoring results.
