maltodextrin in my fiber supplent!! BAD??

Postby andrewpmast on Tue Jun 16, 2009 3:29 pm

My fiber supplement has maltodextrin in it and I'm worried that this is going to cause an insulin spike.

I don't know ANYTHING about maltodextrin so I'm concerned.

The carb breakdown according to the label is:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product. ... ngredients
Equate Fiber Therapy (sugar free)
5 grams carbs
3 grams insoluble fiber
2 grams soluble fiber

Ingredients: Active Ingredient (In Each Dose): Psyllium Husk 3.4 Gm, Purpose - Bulk-Forming Laxative. Other Ingredients: Psyllium Husk, Aspartame, Citric Acid, Fd&C Yellow #6, Maltodextrin, Natural and Artificial Orange Flavor, Polysorbate-80.

It''s labled "sugar free" but I swore I read that maltodextrin is a sugar! I'M TOTALLY FRUSTRATED AND CONFUSED.

I looked on the net but I can't find information to contact Equate, the company.

Maltodextrin is produced from corn starch carbohydrate energy source, normally used to help out when bulking. The name 'Maltodextrin' refers to Dextrose. Maltodextrin results in a glycemic response similar to that of Dextrose. Not so good on low carb days. Aspartame no good either on a low carb diet.

So, this is garbage... I'll have to find a fiber that consists only of pure husk, nothing else.

What's weird is that the sugars listing is 0, so I can assume it has 1/2 gram of carb. If that's the case, I just ate 10 servings, 5 grams carbs.

Or just eat food and forget about the fiber supplements. I bought some when I started my low-carb journey back in September, and I used it about twice just because-- never needed it in actuality. Eat your vegetables and drink your liquids like you're supposed to and it shouldn't be an issue.

The maltodextrin is just like the maltodextrin content in a packet of Splenda, a carrier for the teeny-tiny amount of sweetener. If you look, you'll notice that in Splenda, dextrose and maltodextrin are listed before sucralose, which is why the carb content of a packet of Splenda is not negligible when you start using more than one packet. However, in this fiber therapy, you'll see that aspartame is listed before the maltodextrin, as is Yellow #6. Aspartame is so concentrated that they only need a tiny amount, which is why its calories are negligible. I imagine food coloring agents are similarly concentrated, so the amount of maltodextrin must be much less than the amount you find in a Splenda packet. To me, this says that the amount of maltodextrin in your fiber therapy truly is negligible.

Go find something else to worry about now, my dear friend. ;)

Thanks for all the advice on this. Yea, the spinach smoothies and broccoli and lettuce should be enough.
