Net Carb Question

Postby danco36 on Mon Aug 29, 2011 7:32 pm

Question on net carbs on calorie count.

Let's say for my 1 cup of steamed broccoli:
52 calories
.2 grams of fat = 1.8 calories
9.8 grams of carbs = 39.2 calories
9.7 grams of protein = 22.8 calories

So my total calorie count is 63.8 calories
So really even though the carbs are listed as total carbs or 9.8 the net carbs from this is really in the range of 6 -7 right?

Figuring from US standards of labeling.

Total carbs - Fiber carbs = Net carbs. Fiber carbs have the same calories as non-fiber carbs, but are not converted to use as energy. I would imagine (too lazy to look it up) that your broccoli has a couple of fiber grams, so yes, 6-7 sounds about right. Also, broccoli has a lot of protein, but not 9.7 grams per cup. I think you meant 5.7g. ;)

I've been wondering about this too. So would you not count the calories from fiber? I was subtracting the fiber to get net carbs, but when I do that, I go over on total calories for the day (I'm doing TSPA which has a strict calorie count).

Sorry I misstated that. Glycogen does not accrue from fiber, but energy does. You do count the calories from fiber, but you do not count the carbs from fiber.
