New guy MANS diet

Postby fenrisulfr on Sun Aug 14, 2011 7:45 pm

Hi all.
On 7th day of first time doing MANS diet. I am pretty impressed seeing as I lost two pounds as of yesterday morning. I've been stuck at 235 for a good while on my old diet of clean eating balanced meals. As for my workout I do a four day split. Back and Bi's, Chest Calves and ABs, Legs, Shoulders and Triceps. So here are some questions about the diet. Should I be eating fibrous carbs throughout the week? I have seen other carb cycling diet where you eat fibrous carbs and then switch to starchy carbs. Second question. I always have a morning wake up shake that includes, 1/2 cup oats, 1 banana, 3-5 strawberries, 1 TSP wheat germ, 1TSP milled flax seed, 1 scoop optimum nutrition whey, 1 cup skim milk. How can I adapt this to the MANS diet? I am excited for my next low carb cycle because I made some mistakes and i can do an even better job now that I have more knowledge. My second meal was always 1/2 cup oats, 1 1/2 cups special k protein plus, 1 TSP wheat germ, 1TSP milled flax seed, and milk. I now eat 3 eggs, and 3 slices of bacon instead. Oh and by the way, I love eating all the stuff I haven't been able to eat for a long time because I was on a low fat diet.

OK on carb-up day, but forget it any other time.

So your to start off with how many carbs per day on MANS?

Mark says "I recommend you start out at 30 grams per day and adjust from there. Don’t make any changes to this for at least a week because you need to make the metabolic switch to burning fat for fuel first. Once this is completed you will be able to tell from your workout performances whether or not you need some more carbs (if so increase in 5 gram per day increments)."

"I have seen other carb cycling diet where you eat fibrous carbs and then switch to starchy carbs. Second question. Answer : Cut out the carbs.

Should I be eating fibrous carbs throughout the week?

Answer: Many people find eating a high protein low carb diet to lack fiber so that is probably a good idea.

How do bananas fit into this diet?

Answer: They don't except on your carb up days.

Here is the fruit you can eat. http://www.musclehack.com/what-fruit-ca ... carb-diet/

Seems impossible to me to only eat 30 grams of carbs a day.... I drink a lot of milk so right there I'm doomed. I'm gonna miss my bananas as well.. This is gonna be hard. Thanks for the responses you guys. I was clearly off track on this diet. Starting tomorrow I count carbs.

You can drink any unsweetened almond milk (1g protein per cup) or, if you're in the USA, 8th Continent Light Original soymilk (6g protein per cup) if you don't want any unsweetened version. They only have 2g carbs per cup. That will make up for the milk carbs you've been drinking. If it's all too difficult to adapt to MANS, then give GLAD a try.

Thanks for that milk tip. For my wake up shake I made 1/2 cup FAGE greek yogurt, some strawbeerries, black berries, and rasberries, with whey. So I'm doing ok without milk and banana there. Thanks for the help guys.

when you say you drink a lot of milk, is this adding to tea/coffee, or do you drink just plain ordinary milk by itself?
basically on mans you want to lose the milk, replace with water. if you are adding to tea and coffee double cream is your new best friend. in coffee just pour it in, it actually tastes much much better than with milk especially in fresh ground coffee, in tea, ok this is where it doesnt work so well, but if you mix 50ml cream in a bottle with water it works better for tea.
as for carbs you want to keep this as low as you can, save the carbs for your carb up day. ONLY increase carbs if your workouts suffer.
Losing carbs does seem difficult at first, but it gets easier, work out your no no list so no bread no pasta, potatoes, rice, oats...
then look at what you can eat cheese, meats, leafy greens (salads, broccoli cabbage..) and work out varied ENJOYABLE meal plans. I loved my breakfasts bacon eggs and mushrooms every morning :) i really enjoyed plates of meats: salamis, hams, pastarmi with cheeses, then you got steak and broccoli, eating chicken legs and thighs...

Basically I drank a lot of milk, just for the protein. Morning shake, in coffee, cereal later, as a drink with meals, post workout shake, and chugged some before bed. I am adapting pretty well to the diet though. I have all the necessary food I need. Low carb greek yogurt, soy milk, lots of chicken and turkey burgers, eggs and bacon, berries, heavy cream for my coffee. I am going to pick up more red meat and more no carb cheeses. I think I had 30.3 carbs yesterday and am on track to have 30 or less today. The tips from you guys have really helped. My goal for the longest time was 230 lbs. But now I can be at 220 lbs in 5 weeks. My omron scale says I am 233 lbs, 36% Muscle mass, and 24% fat. So I will get to 220 and see if I am happy there.

I do have another question. I plan on my carb up starting at 6:00 pm Saturday. How many cabs do I allow myself until 6:00? Second, is there a limit to the carbs I eat until sunday night, like a guideline number or just eat whatever I want?
Thanks!
