One day of low carb leads to Keytone bodies!

Postby andrewpmast on Mon May 04, 2009 1:35 pm

Wow, I had a complete night of fun food... My wife and some friends did a 'tex-mex night... wine, margaritas (with sugar free low carb mix), corn tortillas, beans, you name it. I probably at 1500 calories. So, I woke up Sunday and decided to do a crazy 'no' carb diet for the entire day. I probably had (by days end) 50 carbs, mostly just in the protein shakes, low carb wraps and some veggies. Anyway, in the evening I was curious if I was burning ketones because I had been playing basketball and running and I was sure that I burned up my glycogen stores. Sure enough the strip was dark purple. It doesn't take much for me I guess!

I really think that what did it was the aerobics. I think that the cardio (biking, running, basketball) burned it up so fast that my body had to get that energy is needed. That's my only explanation. I wonder if someone else could test that out... eat low carb for a day (or more), pee on a keto strip and then do a bunch of cardio and pee on another keto strip to see if it changes.

I volunteer. You say you ate 50 grams of carbs-- was that net, or total? How many calories did you burn in cardio?

I ate 62 grams of carbs, 13 fiber (I know, that's low)

Here's my food from yesterday: http://www.livestrong.com/thedailyplate ... =159258924

I ate mostly red meat and protein shakes, but combined chicken. Hrm, calories burned. That's a tough one. I played basketball for 15 minutes, rode the skateboard for another 15. Later in the evening, I played more B-ball (about 10 minutes) and did some hard bike riding (up hills and high-gear hard pedalling.

You might say I burned 300 calories.

Sonofabitch! I was sure you were going to say that you worked out for, like, 2 1/2 hours or something. I thought I was going to have to go do a sprint triathlon. Pssssht. 300 calories. Hokay-- I'm gonna get up tomorrow, do the test (I will NOT be in ketosis, I guarantee this), run on my treadmill, stick to the lowest carbs I can, and do a Tabata workout in the afternoon. I'll do another treadmill workout Wednesday morning, then test for ketosis after the workout. I won't restrict my calories or protein really-- it won't be a fat flush diet. Just as close to 0 carb as I can get, and I'll resume my normal low-carb on Wednesday. One day of very little vegetable matter won't kill me.

It will be interesting to see if it works for ya! I'm excited to see the result.

I am of the opinion that once you are fat-adapted -- like you have been before, Andrew -- your body can learn to make the transition to fat-burning much more easily than before. Ketone bodies in the urine aren't a necessary side-effect of being fat-adapted, but are a reliable indicator.

Interesting to me that a single day on low-carb did it for you; when last I checked, it took a minimum of 2-3 days for me below 30g/day. I haven't checked since I started carb-cycling. Perhaps carb-cycling behavior helps your body make the switch even faster?

Yea, I wasn't figuring that my metabolism switched to a 'fat burning' one but then again, I dont' know much about how that works. You do, so I suppose it's possible that my body could switch in one day??? I figured perhaps my body just broke down some proteins/fats to help feed my brain and essential and this was due to an abrupt stop of carbs combined with increased exercise and protein/fat intake. I concluded that the exercise might have warp-speeded my body into getting fat energy to replace my exhausting it's glycogen stores?? I guess I'm surprised and mystified by the whole thing.

Workouts:
  • Tuesday noon - Tabata treadmill running (225 calories)
  • Tuesday 8 p.m. - treadmill walking 1/2 an hour, 10 minutes shoulder PT (170 calories)
  • Wednesday 5:30 a.m. - 2 2/3 mile treadmill jog (375 calories)

Diet for Tuesday: Drink: 3 liters of about 3/4 strength diet soda, 104 ounces of water. Food: 103 g fat, 184 g protein, 61 g carbs, 30 g fiber. 1850 calories. About 200 calories under maintenance, if my calories-burned number for Tuesday is accurate.

Blood glucose readings:
Tuesday 9:45 a.m. - 91 mg/dl (about 2.5 hours postprandial)
Tuesday 6:15 p.m. - 84 mg/dl (about 1.5 hours postprandial)
Wednesday 9:10 a.m. - 93 mg/dl (about 0.5 hours postprandial)

Ketone test at Wednesday 6:30 a.m.: Negative. Nada. Not so much as a trace.

Somebody else needs to run that experiment; my guess is I don't show ketones in my urine and I never will.
