Spinach smoothie

Postby marochka_raduga on Mon Apr 27, 2009 2:39 am

Somebody mentioned he wanted this recipe, so I'm posting it for the general populace. :) This is just the basic recipe, and it can be doctored endlessly.

    Basic recipe nutrition facts: 43 calories, 2 g. fat, 3 g. protein, about 1.8 g. net carbs.

1/2 cup (4 fl. oz.) unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze (you can use an unsweetened light soy milk or Calorie Countdown milk)
100 grams of raw baby spinach

Put it in a blender and whizz it around until it's smooth. Enjoy!

Optional add-ins:
increase Almond Breeze to 1 cup if you want a thinner smoothie
couple of ounces of frozen berries or cantaloupe (or other fruit if your carb count allows)
one or two ounces of raw avocado
one or two T. of nut butter or coconut oil/MCT oil
one or two ounces of Greek yogurt (fat-free is ok if the carbs are low enough) or skyr (which is fat-free Icelandic soft cheese)
several drops of banana candy flavoring oil (mine's by LorAnn brand)
one or two ounces of flavored Torani/DaVinci syrups (I like vanilla, peach, strawberry, black cherry, raspberry, and Almond Roca)
couple of drops of liquid sucralose (if not using a flavored syrup)
3-8 ice cubes if you want an icy smoothie
The Spinach Assassin: Strong to the finish 'cause I eats me spinach!

I just tried mixing it with Vanilla Isopure.

Yeah, don't do that. Makes it gross and unpalatable. Chocolate is OK, but vanilla just came out... funky... I liked my plain Soy isolate in the spinach smoothie with a few berries better.

Yeah, I warned you guys about isopure in the spinach! I used egg-beaters in mine yesterday along with some goat yogurt. The combo was good for a few sips, but then it was a bit much.

I think I'm good to go with a dash of splenda and 4 oz of silk

Of course, my wife thinks it looked disgusting. My co-worker looked disgusted. I told them that I put it in my coffee. Of course, they walked away.

P.S. I don't put it in my coffee.

Definitely looks repulsive when I make it. Kind of a poop-brown color with green chunks. I toss in a strawberry or two, close my eyes, and say "ahh".

I really have become a big fan of Truvia. Sure, it's expensive, but finally a product that combines two sweeteners that don't affect my blood sugar: stevia and erythritol.

Liquid splenda doesn't either, but the powdered cornstarch it's often packaged with sure does.

Anyway, yeah, the spinach smoothies are terrifically filling and low-calorie. I don't need them much at my current body fat percentage, but I see a day when I'm closer to a six-pack that it will really matter!

You guys are hitting all the selling points! It's just part of the whole package of manning up, lifting big and eating for results. ;) (never mind the results I've been eating for lately) I think maybe I need to start having this twice a day.
