This aint right

Postby cchristopher on Wed May 06, 2009 2:05 am

Ok so I started MANS. Keeping carbs around 20-40grams. I consume about 1800-2200 cals per day. My weight is currently 177. I have a nice balance of fat and protein.

So my problem is this. Day 2 I started getting the "headache" as well as brain fog . I freaked a bit and had some carbs went up to 100 grams that day. I continued 20-40 grams for the next 3 days. Felt pretty good drank plenty of water. Today I tried to lift again and bammo stiff neck and crazy headache feel a bit disoriented. What am I doing wrong? Before this diet I never had a headache and could lift anytime. Do I need to wait longer before I start lifting? Am I not eating enough?

It's got me a bit freaked out I googled stiff neck and headache and some of the results were troubling especially if the headache and stiff neck came on abruptly.

Just siginificantly increase your fat intake. This will help offset your lack of energy. So have a serving of creame cheese and sourcream at each meal. That will help.

Well energy does not seem to be a problem at this point. It is the headache which is only brought on by 5 minutes of lifting. I mean it feels like an instant migraine accompanied by light headed feeling. Here is what my macros look like for today so far.

the fat is on the low side. You should get 200+ grams of fat. I ate tons of sour cream and cheese and was fine during the introduction phase. I think you are suffering because your calories and fat grams are low

I think you are right. I have read that fats need to be extremely high. I just thought 100-120 was pretty high I normally take about 70-90. I will give the sour cream a try. I also drink heavy/whipping cream.

Thanks for your insight.

What you're describing sounds like a blood pressure spike, and I don't think it's anything to do with starting low-carb. My husband randomly had it happen while deadlifting after years of being a lifter. It came on just as he cleared the floor, and he immediately laid off, but he had light sensitivity and had to lay down for a long time before it went away. He doesn't eat low carb, so I doubt there's a link to that.

Apparently if it doesn't happen all the time, it's no big deal.

It never happens ever. Except now on this diet. I have done quite a bit of reading on this diet and headaches are apparently a part of ketosis induction, so maybe I am just aggravating it. I think maybe I have not completed induction and fats seem possibly low. I will experiment a bit with the fats to find what is optimal.

I used to get splitting headaches on my legs/back workout days (which is pretty strenuous activity) and I low-carbed... my guess is that it has something to do with low blood sugar especially if your body isn't completely fat adapted. Never really found a way to get away from it; sometimes caffeine before the workout helps, and eating a little something helps too. Another thing you could try is doing the hardest workouts during your carb-up phase of the week.. if it's low blood sugar, that could help. Good luck!

Seriously I am on GLAD diet and there are days i have 80-90g of fat with 240-260g of carbs and I still lose weight and I don't have a fast metabolism. I am 154lbs, and you are 177lbs. The problem is obvious I think.
