Time out due to injury - best diet?

Postby michi:san on Mon Jun 13, 2011 1:42 pm

Hi

I wanted to throw this out to the forum. I have searched around for answers to this, not just on this forum, but also on the wider internet, and haven't found anything satisfactory.

I've just damaged my shoulder cuff, and it looks like i'm going to have to take a month or so off training.

The question I was looking to answer is "what's the best diet / supplements to try and retain as much of my hard earned muscle as possible, whilst not putting any weight on in the meantime?"

My gut feel is a low carb (say 100g a day) diet like TSPA, and supplement with amino acids such (Glutamine, Leucine), and keep protein intake high (1g per 1lb or bodyweight as a min)

Any other views out there?

My guess is that extra protein and other supplements won't help if you're not exercising. I would simply go with a maintenance diet for now and take the time off to let your body heal. It won't take long to get back into shape when you resume. I'm interested to hear if anyone else has any actual experience with taking protein and supplements during down time, however.

Protein is the building blocks. Hospitals give their surgery and injury patients more protein.
carbs if not burning them will make you fatter.

This.

Basically, low-carb it TSPA style without the calorie deficit, and calculate your BMR as sedentary instead of active (1.2x RMR, not the 1.55).

Get well soon! I've just spent months injured with a bicep tendon problem only just getting back to normal, it's very frustrating!!!
