Two different muscular approaches - RACE TIME

Postby lburnham on Sat Jun 20, 2009 9:27 am

Hi, this is pretty exciting.
Me and a friend are having a race.
He has suddenly gained a new enthusiasm for working out, which rivals my enthusiasm for working out. He's a bit jealous of my gains (I'm on MANS and I'm untertaking THT). So we have challenged each other to a race to see who can look the best at the end of 4 months! It was originally 10 weeks, but I upped it because my secret weapon will be using Total Six Pack Abs (TSPA).

Now, here's why it's so exciting lol..

I'm gonna win !!!

His "muscular approach" doesn't really have a name, but if you have been in a gym recently you will see many guys like him undertaking it.
He works out 2 hours a day in the gym. Every day. He doesn't sqaut. He doesn't deadlift. He doesn't use military presses. In fact he does endless sets (hundreds, he boasts) of dumbbell curls and barbell curls. Occasionally he breaks this up with a trip to the overhead pulldown. He hasn't progressed on his dumbbell curls since he started. He is still on 10kg.

My "muscular approach" is Targeted Hypertrophy training. I train one body part a week, 8-12 reps. And I train everything. A typical statistic for how this has aided my progress - in 2 months my barbell curl of 10kg has now reached 16 kg. Next week it will be 16.5kg. (I go up in tiny stages)

His diet approach is...well, he doesn't have one. He eats what he wants, sometimes neglecting food all day. Although he dropped into conversation that he mixed a protein shake with vodka yesterday for a buzz. So perhaps he has an arsenal of secret supplements.

My supplements are whey protein isolate, l-gutamine and creatine. My diet is MANS http://www.musclehack.com/best-bodybuil ... -revealed/

I have tried time and again to help him. I tell him to only spend 40 minutes working out. Don't work your arms out everyday. Up your protein, drop your carbs. Yet despite my results becoming obvious, he thinks I am trying to hinder his progress.

"You're telling me that 2 to 3 hours a day in the gym won't do something?" he says, flexing a deflated bicep.

Oh well. I tried, like a good friend. Now all I can do is sit back, eat clean, pump some iron and in 4 months hit the beaches to show him my trophy.

:) :)
It's a great thing when you realise you still have the ability to suprise yourself
