Personal Training as a career?

Postby Raesh on Sat Jan 24, 2009 12:43 pm

Hey there guys

I have read this forum and kept watch on this site for a long while now, even before it had forums. I am in no means a bodybuilder, but I am extremely active and very health conscious. I read up a lot and talk to all the gym rats -lol- and have way too many health magazine subscriptions.

Anyways, I am district manager for a retail chain here in Vancouver B.C. and have not been enjoying work, I just got back from a holiday vacation back home and ended up talking a lot with my father about lifting and nutrition.. etc (he is a firefighter and a certified personal trainer) and he was telling me I know my shit. I am aware there are certifications and lots of studying to do if I was to become licensed.. but it is something that I really enjoy.

My real question is, is that enough?

How is the Personal Training field doing these days?... I know the variances between reported earnings from Trainers and the amount you make depends on the # of certs, and basically the kind of effort you put into your -business-?...

Is this something that is easy to get into, and what are the requirements. I know there are many organizations that offer certifications courses.. ACE, AFI etc. But if there is anyone who knows more about Canada's -national equivalent- I would love as much information as I can get, even as a private message here.

Where is the best to get started?... Should I get a job at a local gym, try to score an apprentice/internship at a physiotherapists office or what?

Also, since I have been thinking about this I have gotten really fired up, is this a transition I can make swiftly, as my current job is seemingly duller and duller.

Any insight or advice is welcome.

If you wanna do it you can. From an options perspective I am not sure what avenues you would need to pursue. In my area it seems a lot of the positions are self manifested through a new gym chain called SNAP fitness. A lot of the partnered owners at various franchises simply assign themselves as that gyms Personal Trainer. I would probably approach it initially by studying for certs and getting all the certifications and knowledge you can in free time and then continuously apply for personal trainer positions with established gyms and Rec Centers. It could offer you the opportunity to transfer job sectors more seamlessly. Please keep us informed on how it goes no matter what!
