won't it stunt his growth? The growth hormones being used up for building muscle tissue instead of growth?

I dunno, that kid might have the genetic abnormality that I think is called "double muscle". It may not be steroids at all. There aren't many documented cases of it, but some kids are born naturally lean and very muscular. The mutation is becoming increasingly common in certain breeds of racing dogs, and is less common in humans. Example article:
