Gym and Diet Tracking

Postby kearnsmark on Wed May 06, 2009 9:37 am

Hey, I know this question has been asked before, but Does anybody know Any good apps to download from the Itunes App store to help with logging what your doing in the gym and what you eat throughout the day?

Ive just recently got an Ipod Touch, and im sure my friend uses a similar device with an app that actually shows his body fat, weight, strength increase, body measurements and how they change over time - on a graph!haha - Any help greatly appriciated.

Thanks,
Mark Kearns

Matt will know for sure all the options, but I know that TheDailyPlate.com has a mobile feature for the iPod/iPhone.

Livestrong.com & Gym Buddy are what I use.

There may be better, and there may be worse, but those get me through the day and help me keep breaking personal records in the gym. Not that I'm a stud in the gym; I just keep improving. Though it's frustrating to drop weight in the name of better (deeper) form with squats. I'm man enough to admit that if I push my ass to ankles in a squat I can barely lift half the weight I did before.

I have an iPod Touch and I use Lose It! because it's free and I'm cheap. It tracks food and weight. It's a decent app. I may check out the Livestrong.com app (The Daily Plate).

Does that sync your updates to the website Matt?

Yep, I swap between the site and my phone all day long. There are occasional days -- it's happened to me three or four times in several months of using it -- that the two end up out of sync somehow, but in those cases the web site is almost always the authoritative version, and I stop using the phone for that day.

Thing I really like about Gym Buddy is defining custom exercises, custom workouts with those exercises, and easy export to spreadsheets for tracking.

I know that iFittness is the best selling workout App and it does look pretty good, you can make up your workout by compiling different exercises and then listing them in order of a week, so you never have to think about what your doing on what day. - it also keeps track of your progress, but I am still yet to purchase it.

Im not sure which app to get reguarding diet tracking, as I believe some require constant internet access, And although this may prove no problem to Matt B - ( Lucky Iphone user, haha ) My modest Ipod touch, needs a WiFi hotspot to connect, so not really desireable....there must be some inbetween app?

I bought Gym Buddy last night based on Matt's recommendation. It seems pretty slick. It's exercise bank doesn't seem to be as extensive as iFittness but you have the ability to add exercises. Gym Buddy also has a simple body composition tracker and chart. I thought this was a good addition.

Lose It! is definitely worth looking into. It requires no internet connection. It doesn't have the extensive database that DailyPlate has and it also doesn't sync anywhere or have an export function. I've been using it since February. I'll probably checkout DailyPlate so that I can have something that syncs and can be updated on the web.

Yeah, if internet access is questionable for you, Lose It! definitely seems to be the most popular food-tracking application for the Touch & iPhone. You could go with LiveStrong if you wanted to, and just do like I do: sit down first thing in the morning to plan all your meals, then update what you eat for dinner when you're home in the evening.
