Well from one Bear to another - I dont see the problem. You will still be spending time in the gym, only slightly focussing on different intensity/style of exercising, but essentially at some point or other you will both need to bench press, squat or what ever exercise you are doing and need someone to spot you.
It doesnt matter if when they get on the iron, they do a slight variation of the exercise or put on more weight to the bar. You will both need a spot no matter what your training interest is. The point is you dont have to train exactly the same as the guy you are working with.
On a final note though, surely if you are now pals this shouldnt be an issue? You enjoy each others company and you go to the same gym. Dont worry about it, and keep training.
