new to this and looking for advice

Postby lockndrop on Fri Apr 29, 2011 3:52 am

I am 42 years old and for the last ten + years i have been living a very lazy life and in the course of that lazy life i have gained a spare tire of about an additional 50 pound.
I recently started at the local gym and am doing low intensity treadmill for about one hour a day ( was told its the best at the moment due to my lack of fitness and the extra weight being bad for the knees )
The question is I have no real focus except losing weight because i just don't know what to do .
Any help is greatly appreciated, I have plenty of time to spend in the gym and i want to spend my time wisely and see some kinda improvement withing 6 months. is it possible ?

Firstly, congratulations on getting the motivation to get this far. Most people never make it to the point where they are serious enough to make the changes.

Secondly, I think most everyone here would agree with me that your main concern should be diet. You can run 5 miles every morning on that treadmill, but unless you change your diet your not going to see the changes that you want to see. This is why those people on The Biggest Loser see such great results, they have people controlling their every calorie. That being said I suggest you either start out with one of Mark's diets. The best one would obviously be Total Six Pack Abs which is geared for losing fat and losing it quickly. With the excess weight you describe you WILL see some awesome results, that is if you follow the diet.

Lastly, if you must do cardio switch over to HIIT. This will kick your A**. The best part about HIIT you can push yourself harder and harder each and every time and it will make you feel amazing and accomplished.

Good Luck

I agree, you have already made the commitment to change thats the biggest obsticle. I am 42 and weighed 218lbs last June, I saw a picture of myself and changed my life because of it. I started by walking 1-2 hours per day and the pounds fell off but the diet had to change with it. I then started with the "mans" diet to build lean mass, again following strict diet layed out in the program. Now I'm on Tspa and loving the transformation, it works and the results will motivate you. I now weigh 173.5lbs with a 18% BF so I have a way to go yet. Hope you succeed and remember its about being healthy over the rest of your life so dont set a un-realistic timeline for results they will come.

great to see that you are motivated to make changes. once you lose the weight...it will be so much easier and you will enjoy bulking up and building more muscle. its never too late to have the body of your dreams and you can still weight train even at 42
