10x10 Method

Postby jf16 on Mon May 02, 2011 6:33 pm

I stumbled across this method of training today and was a bit interested.
Basically what you do is start out with a weight that you can complete 20 reps on, but you only do 10 reps. Then you do another 10 reps of the same weight, and continue to do the same weight at a rep of 10 each set. At the end of the sets (8th-10th) you should not be completing the entire 10 reps, and if you can do that, you will need to add more weight.
So, like most others, I was thinking about how this could be leaning towards more cardio than actual weight training, but after seeing some results of this(presumably not enhanced by steroids) it seemed pretty legitimate.
This site http://www.weighttrainingadvice.com/10x10workout.html suggested it to be used for breaking through plateaus and I think that would probably a very useful tool if and when you do hit a plateau. I have made absolutely FANTASTIC gains with Mark's THT cycles but I am very interested in trying to see how this works for a short time. My current HIT 10 week cycle is almost over and Mark said that THT 4.0 will be coming out in may so I might try this out in between? If I see significant size gains, I will be sure to let anyone who is willing to listen know.

Based on the article you linked, it seems this method is specifically to thwart plateaus... don't know that I'd use it for anything else, honestly... :?

I'm really thinking more along the lines of this being contrary to what we know about muscle growth, as well as making significant inroads into your strength via burning up glycogen reserves doing exercises that will only tax Type I and IIA fibers, and not the IIB fibers that account for the majority of your mass and strength...

Thats basically what I was thinking in the back of my head, but I guess I was just wanting to get into something new after being on the same cycle for almost 10 weeks(minus about 2 days). I guess maybe I was tired of focusing mainly on strength than size, which was my main goal, from doing only 1 set per body part. And I tried it with just my cable preacher curls and my arms did look bigger...for about 30 minutes. So yeah if you're about to go shoot for the cover of a magazine, maybe then you would want to use this, but other than that, I think this is for the most part not a very good method.

That sounds very similar to GVT : German Volume Training. If you are interested in something with a higher *perceived* intensity then do some in depth research on German Volume Training cycles and the principles behind it. Does it work? Yep and it does help in adding strength/endurance. Honestly, I am not entirely convinced that it would be the best thing for you to start in between your current cycles and the new THT.

If I were you, I would maybe try something that is more similarly in line with the THT format. One thing that comes to mind is Max OT training. Google AST max OT (because i do not know their website URL) to find it and pull it up. The program is free. Max OT incorporates a good deal of the same principles that you see Mark teach. However....one thing about the Max OT "course" ...some parts of it you have to use common sense on. The author was blatantly wrong a couple different accounts...such as diet. Jeff Willet is a huge proponent of Max OT training so I do believe the system works. I have a man crush (no homo) on Willet. He seems to be a very genuine individual much like the creator of this very board. I would certainly take a week off in between Max OT and THT 4.0 though.

I wish you the best in your training and continued success in all that you do!
