GL Application?

Postby jf16 on Fri May 27, 2011 6:16 am

I'm not on G.L.A.D. yet, but I am going to be soon after my cut and I was wondering if anybody knew an app for android that would monitor things like gl's and total calories? I use FatSecret.com's "Calorie Counter" app at the moment and its really good with most of everything you could need: bar code scanner, restaurant foods, etc. It can count the obvious carbs protein and fat, and also net carbs, sodium, protein, RDI, etc. I just need something to watch my GLs when I do start G.L.A.D.

That's going to be immensely tough to find. I'm in the same boat as you; I'm about to start GLAD and I currently use the fatsecret app. The reason why the fatsecret app works so well is because there's already a massive database available of all the foods and their nutritional content. No such database exists for glycemic load.

At this point, we have two options:
1) Go into fatsecret, and set your settings to monitor something extra (something you don't use or care about, like sodium or cholesterol). Create a personal food entry for all your common foods, and just set the sodium or cholesterol level to the GL of your foods. That way, when you add your foods, your new column will represent GL. You'll still have to enter your GLs manually the first time you add a new food though.

2) I'm considering writing an android app for GLAD, but I'm not sure what the best kind of functionality would be. I'm thinking of something that just lets you store your common foods (along with macros and GL), then you can always pick from those. This would still mean that you have to enter all the information manually the first time you add a new food, but at least I could customize it and make it more GLAD-like. I would probably include a calculator to figure out your calories and minimum protein, and possibly some warnings if you overshoot your GL. Also, there would be a GL column instead of just makeshifting one out of the sodium column on fatsecret.

If you have a better idea on how to do this, please let me know. Anything we come up with though is going to be a pain at first, simply because there is no repository of data (like fatsecret) that includes GL.
