M.A.N.S. Big Low Carb Food List

Postby Mark McManus on Mon Jul 07, 2008 10:33 pm

Ok, Let's make the MANS Low Carb section as easy as possible to follow.

What we want to do here is create a BIG list of food options, so let's brainstorm. :ugeek:

Later, you can print off this page and stick it on your fridge door, so any time you go into the kitchen you can look down that huge list and be spoiled for choice!
I'll put some initial ideas up here, you add below and then later I can add them to the list.

Meals

Snacks

Fruits

    Rhubarb
    Strawberries
    Cranberries
    Raspberries
    Blackberries
    Grapefruit
    Melon (all types)

Beverages

    Tea
    Coffee with cream
Hot Cocoa with cream :D (buy unsweetened cocoa)
    Diet Soda (sweetened with sucralose)
    Green Tea
    Water

Ok, that gets us started. Go ahead and add more - I'll check back and add to the list as necessary.

Mark

Yes, Melon is fine. You have to weigh up the GI rating with the actual amount of carbs, which for melon is low. You do have to eat small portions of fruit on the low carb section. I personally don't eat any until the weekend.

Stacey - I'll add that salad, sounds great!

what does a carb-up day look like for a women that is 125 pnds. i would like an approximation, perhaps foods and calories. anyone have any ideas. i am new to this diet. i want to keep adding muscle but not retain the fat. most of the info is for men, so if you have any info for women, i would appreciate it.

Great list! Always useful to get the mind freshed up with some new things.
I guess I'll be posting some food recipes once I find some time, but first to angela's question.

@angela
The carb-up period is no different for women than it is for men. The main goal of carbing-up is to get your body energy levels up again (insulin spike). So keep the fat intake low, protein intake moderate and eat lots of carbs. I suggest going with fruits you can't eat during the low-carb periods (apples, oranges, bananas, etc.) and eating whole grain products.I try to stay at 2 junk food meals at max. Eat until you're full and drink lots of water (I seem to drink less water in my carb-up periods, that's why I mention it here :) )
I mainly use the carb-up period to get in my vitamins I miss during the low-carb period. Here an example of a carb-up day:
Breakfast: Cereal with milk and sliced banana / Oatmeal / Whole grain bread with any spread
Snack: orange / apple / banana until enough
Lunch: Whole grain pasta with tomato sauce and garlic bread / brown rice with sauce
Snack: Candy (yeah I love candy, but try to keep it low)
Dinner: Pizza / Burger King / Taco Bell (generally i like eating mexican food on my carb-up period)
That should add up to around 2.500kcal. I usually eat much more though and only have one carb-up day per week :D
I also try to drink lots of fruit juices throughout the day. Helps getting in the vitamins and antioxidants.
Basically on your carb-up period you want to eat what high-carb/low-fat dieters eat. That should give you a good start.
I always enjoy my carb-up periods and eat without thinking about what I'm eating. Just relax and eat when you're hungry.

Following article seems pretty interesting:

Hope I could help you. Have fun carbing-up!

Textured Vegetable Protein; you just boil some water and pour a cup of the TVP flakes in. One serving has 12 grams of protein and 3 grams of net carbohydrates at 80 calories. It works good as a filler, you can add spices and vegetables to it for a quick meal.
