Will my training undermine my diet?

Postby Stuart on Fri Jan 22, 2010 3:29 pm

I'm a 44 yo guy in Scotland who has tried soooo many different diets, pills, shakes and witchcraft! I'm inspired by your article and the positive testimonials but because I've had so little success in the past I'm wondering if it's the intensity and/or regularity of my training that is being counter-productive. Maybe that's a really stupid thing to say but I'm trying my hardest to get a body shape I'm no longer a bit shy about and I'm obviously not informed enough. I'm 77kg and struggling to lose the spare Mitchellin. I train 4-5 times a week, resistance for upper body with relatively heavy weights twice a week and 2 x 5k run the other times. Should I stop training for a couple of weeks while on this diet?
If I knew then what I know now would I have done things differently? .... NAH!

Hey there. Age plays a role on fat loss, so keep your expectations real. When I was 20 I could eat like shite and still stay thin. Now, I look at food and I gain fat. What do you want as you continue? Mark's body (lean and bulky) or something lean and ripped (like PX90) or just big (like an American Football lineman)? Running a lot will cut down on muscle bulk growth, well known reality. But, running alot will adapt your body to use fat more efficiently (note, marathon runners are thin but lack muscle bulk). Mark works really hard and is completely committed to staying as lean as he can with muscle. Like he told me recently, what fun is it if you can only take your shirt off 2 weeks out of the year!

What's your daily diet consist of? Do you drink beer? Do you eat fast foods? Based on the exercise you outlined, I'm leaning toward the diet as a possible culprit.
