Elbow Pain

Postby slabbie750 on Tue Mar 09, 2010 5:07 pm

I'm starting to get pains in my elbows when bench pressing.
As I'm only back to training 3 months now after a long layoff and trying to gain mass, I'm a little worried.
The pain is like a rod is being inserted from my joint to my wrist and usually comes in about the 3rd rep.
Because I'm still a "beginner", really, I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong? I'm using about 55kgs with my bar .
Any suggestions guys?

Hi Slabbie,
are you comfortably hitting your rep targets of 8-12 using this weight. If you are struggling to do this, the excess weight may be hurting your joints, ie too heavy too soon.
I initially suffered pain in my shoulder and elbow when I first started training again. I am 37 and had a long layoff.
Using progressive overload I started with 40kg Bench press and now 3 months later I press 80kg.
I always try to train to the max but if any pain appears, back off and lower weight.
Hope this helps,
Cheers

Thanks,
yes, I'm hitting the reps ok, but I'm worried about the pain.
If I shifted to dumbbells, do you think this would help?

The same thing happened to me awhile ago with my elbow, I think it was a minor sprain and it went away after a few weeks. Generally if something is hurting during a certain workout, you just need to find another workout for the same muscle to replace it with until the pain goes away. You may have sprained it in some other workout or doing some other activity without realizing it as you probably don't really notice any pain until you place a load on it.

hi guys,
going back to when I was suffering with this pain, it was during bench press & flys. I narrowed my grip on the barbell to just wider than shoulder, this eased it a lot, I also switched to pec deck so did not put any strain on elbow there either.
