Adding Muscle Mass and How do You Know

Postby necromanc on Thu Apr 21, 2011 9:42 am

1. If I have the same body fat but my weight increases it means that I'm adding muscle mass right ?
2. How much muscle mass someone can add in one month ? I know that it depends on each person, but an estimate.

Hey necromanc

Theres 600 cals in a pound of muscle! Its really hard to say you would really need to be stuck in a lab to get the correct estimate but i would safely say if your diet and training was 100% you could gain one to one and a half pound of muscle a month on a bulk diet, dont think for one minute that that is'nt much when you get seven pound of solid mass on you you wont beleive your eyes, yes the measurements might not look overwhelming but your overall frame will.

If it's static, then you're adding muscle mass and adipose tissue at the same time. If it increases you're adding fat faster than muscle, if it decreases you're adding muscle faster than fat.

What LALA said. 3-5lbs ballpark in a month's time, unless you're a beginner or using steroids or hormones.

Also, about that muscle is 600 calories... this is where lifters go awry on bulking, and Mark's written on this head before. You do want to eat and eat big, you do not want to devour everything in sight and eat some crazy 500-600 calories above maintenance. Shoot for 200ish above maintenance. You figure, if you eat 500 calories above maintenance every day, that's 3500 calories in a week, and you won't be adding no 6 pounds of muscle. You can take on wild flying guess where the excess calories will go (hint: it isn't "away"). 200 day makes for 1400 a week and translates into 2lbs. You can realistically get pretty close to that, thus minimizing fat gains. ;)

HHHHMMMM HHHHHHHMMMMMMM

I said 1-1.5lbs of muscle in a month, i thought i was being realistic even for a beginner if i was at 7%bf and started glad or mans at 2-300 cals above and gained 12-18 pounds lean mass and 6pounds of fat on top of that leaving me just over 8%bf i would be EXSTATIC i hope i spelt this word right  i think that would be a damn good return for the year while still keeping my abs but maybe our calculations counted up would not be far of the mark (pardon the pun) as we are both singing of the same hyme sheet

LALA & JoH thanks for replies.

If I'm trying to get a below 10% body fat, can I still add muscle in this period ? I'm eating the right amount of proteins but I'm eating 600-700 calories lower than my maintenance level. I'm pretty confused but I think that if the muscle is feed well it should grow.

YUP!

It's hard as hell, but it's doable. If that's the goal, plop the few bucks on TSPA and make it your religion until you meet your goal.
