Dont have the machine at my gym either but it looks awesome!
I do free weight and go fairly heavy to really feel that stretch at the bottom.
Dont know why you would waste time with the cable if it takes long- cables give u continuous tension which is good, but with enough weight and gravity u isoate the lats and stretch them out fine with free weights.
Just make sure u do a warmup set first with light weight.
