Cardio vs Muscle Experiment: Biking between Cycles

Postby JohnOregon on Mon May 09, 2011 4:48 pm

Ok, lots of interesting stuff to share with MuscleHack.
One at a time. Here is the first, then I gotta go to work.
So I did 11 week cycle so my rest week would be on my vacation in New York City visiting my daughter.
I did major cardio/aerobics while there on a bicycle I took with me. You can see all the pictures in several of my photo albums on facebook account.
Here is the amount (in aprox miles):
20 first day
rest 2nd day
50 third day
rest 4th day
20 fourth day
rest 5thday (rained like heck)
60 6th day
total over the 1 week *rest* period: 150 miles

I kept the protein/BCAA intake the same over the whole period.
I ate like a pig all week, but always kept the fat content going with Coconut Oil and egg yolks.
For rescue nutrition I used a ton of Hammer endurance drinks and extra carbs on the bike days.

So I come back and here are the result of my first day, a shoulder day.
Before I left--Laterals/Overhead press smith machine seated:
first set: 15s:11squeek, 85:8squeek
second set: 15s: 7, 70:9
third set: 10s: 13, 60:8
Cables Overhead Press (seated, no backrest)
first set: 50:6squeek
second set: 35:9squeek
Traps
185:12
185:10
180:8

After week vacation with tons of cardio, Laterals/Overhead press smith machine seated:
first set: 15s: 7squeek, 80:8
second set: 12s: 9squeek, 70:7
third set: 10s:10squeek, 55:8
Cables Overhead Press (seated, no backrest)
first set: 45:7
second set: 30:12
Traps
187:7
170:11squeek
170:11squeek

(squeek stands for optimized form, barely making it on the last one, wiggling all over the place)

I hope the comparisons are readable.
Point is, the object of my *study* was to see if cardio is muscle's enemy. Conclusion: It is as per Mark's warnings.!
I didn't lose enough to cry over, but I did lose when I should have stayed the same or gained. I kept the exercises exactly the same for this experiment. They were also the same throughout the 11 week cycle. Except for the cables overhead added at the very end last 2 or so.

It is hard, but I think I can give up a tiny little muscle mass for the fun I had biking all over NYC with my daughter. Tomorrow. . . . legs.

Hey johnOregon

Interesting study for you to do, not much loss in power to cry about is right, but you were probably a little exhausted after your holiday to see your daughter main thing is you had a good time bro, are you gonna up the weight next week to coincide with were you left off at week 11 or from this week, it would be interesting to see how you respond if its from week 11 then you mightn't have lost any power at all it could have been just tiredness.

Thats great cycling for being away from that kind of cardio in a while fair play to you, i miss my cardio so much on tspa im like yourself i love stamina training its the best especially now im heading into late 30's i love cycling and long distance running, not into hiit much to be honest the euphoric feeling of knowing i ran for an hour and a half of cycled fo two hours is more rewarding to me than bouncing about like a yoyo for twenty minutes. I'M REALLY MISSING MY CARDIO , BUT I WOULD RATHER LIFT WEIGHTS ANY DAY

Yeah. pretty sure if you take gel sugar stuff religiously you can do the outdoors stuff. That is what I plan to do.
Gained 1 rep or 2 on legs yesterday, go figure.

Lost ton on Chest and Abs today. But I also am missing about 3 hours of sleep last night, so I'm figuring it's that.
