Could be forearm/grip issue like dcm thought in the beginning, too. I routinely get pain that starts at the wrist and feels like it runs straight up the bones thanks to my wrists being so badly spurred. It goes almost completely away as soon as I stop the exercise, so it's one of those lovely permanent damage deals I just get to cope with. For me I notice less pain from hammer curls than bicep curls, too - they're just less effective. I also find hooks help tremendously. They transfer a significant chunk of the load past the weakest point, providing enough relief that I can work through it. Of course, DCM if you don't have anything wrong with your hands or wrists, or if the pain is like Check12 describes and not like mine, then this may not apply to you at all.
Either way, pain is generally your body's way of telling you that you broke something. I say if there's no known prior injury or defect that explains it, definitely stick to what doesn't hurt, efficacy be damned (hammer curls, in your case), until you can get a professional opinion.
