Incline vs. Flat Bench

Postby ellipsis on Fri Dec 30, 2011 7:30 pm

My upper chest really lags behind the mid and lower as far as size. Would there be any harm in doing Incline benches instead of Flat benches. Do inclines still hit the entire chest muscle as flat benches "supposedly" do?
I do:
Flat bench 3x12
Flyes 3x12
Dips 3xFail (bodyweight)

I have no access to machines for cable crossovers. I only have barbells and dumbells.

I find the best way to do incline bench is with just a small incline. I have a shoulder injury and flat bench really agrivates it. So i only ever do incline but with a very small incline. That way i work the whole chest with a slight increases in the upper chest while at the same time not envolving the shoulders to much. The problem with normall incline is that people have the incline to high and so work the shoulder to much. Oh and as a result i have a great upper chest, well defined slabs of the stuff:) Make the switch you won't regret it and i suggest changing to dumbells instead of a barbells. You wont be abe to lift as heavy with the dumbells but they hit the chest soooo much bertter than the barbell does.
Hope this helps.

agreed! Dumbells allow u to contract much better at the top. Bench is great for building strength and size and allows u to go heavy, however i allways get a better squeeze and pump with dumbells.
Incline is great for your upper chest, however i see so many people hoisting huge weight up on the incline, arching their back so much that it turns into a flat bench press. Its kinda sill when u think about it, your not hitting the upper and your gonna get an injury. So make sure at all times you keep your back flat against the bench! (i like to do the movement with my hands and no weight to make sure i have no arch for a set first.
