I think you will get a few different responses to that question. Personally I work out alone most of the time, so for me it makes since to use dumbbells as opposed to a barbell. What really pushed me over the edge on making the switch came after my first cycle of THT. I felt like I had hit a plateau with my bench press (barbell). Part of the reason, in my opinion, is I don't feel like I was pushing quite as hard as I would have if I had a spotter. So I switched over to dumbbells and now I feel like I push harder knowing that if I can't lift it all I have to do is drop the dumbbells to the floor. I don't have to worry about getting the bar to the first set of pegs or doing the whole "roll of shame". Anyway, that is just my opinion so take it for what it is worth "an opinion".
