so the pro's of THT is that when you are doing your sets, you are doing as much weight as you can possibly do within the optimal muscle building rep range. this allows for the most muscle growth possible. it also allows for some serious intensity in your workouts. pyramids are all about some progressive overload. the point of the lower sets is to tire your muscles some for when they get to the heavier sets, hence the name progressive overload. the downside to this is that you aren't moving the kind of weight you have the potential to move when you pyramid up. that being said, you are lifting that lighter weight at a higher level of fatigue, which forces your muscles to work more.
i'll tell ya, i've seen the most progress with lifts similar to THT. i did a cycle of MaxOT when i first started and packed on a bunch of mass and strength. then when i switched to pyramid style i plateaued, so yeah...
