Tangible workout log suggestions?

Postby mrmike on Sat Jul 11, 2009 4:48 am

I'm 29, 6'1" 190lbs, same old story, work out a lot and never really CHANGE. I'm Italian so the high carb diet was certainly contributing to my downfall. Just recently saw Fathead and learned of Gary Taubes book. I had decided that I was going to become a "no carb" guy after reading his work and confirming it. Then I got to thinking that NO CARBS can't be good for someone who wants to build muscle. So I went to Google and typed in Taubes and Bodybuilding and I arrived at MuscleHack!

That simple protein bar sold me instantly! I have Cookies and Cream whey from walmart, mixed it with peanut butter and the turdy looking final product tasted almost exactly like a reeses peanut butter cup, SOOO good! Anyways, on to my question:

I've never kept a work out log but want to start. I like the idea of having a book with me at the gym that I can write in. I plan to follow your recommended workout and diet as best I possibly can. With that in mind, do you think this would be a good workout log book? Do you have any suggestion for another?

Thanks for all you do!

Keeping a log makes such a big difference, you won't look back once you get into it. Mark (the guy who runs this site) has a wrokout log in Excel which you can download via a link on the forums which is great because not only is it great but it's free :) I adapted it a bit so it's only one file and so can also track my nutrition requirements in it but it's good as it is to be honest. I then write out my workout for the day on a bit of paper and bring that to the gym, then update the log when I get back (including the plan for my next workout) and this works really well for me. I don't think an actual workout log would stay looking nice for long if I brought it to my gym, it's not the picture of cleanliness.

There’s no need to go spending money on a log. richard-a has the right idea by saying have your whole routine on one sheet. Make your routine with Excel then print out a copy of your week routine and fill in at the gym get once home up date data.

Here’s an idea of your workout log.

Isn't it more difficult to take a single piece of paper to the gym to write on? I opened that Excel file you linked me to with OpenOffice and when I look at the print preview, it doesn't all fit on one page. I suppose I can abbreviate things and make it all fit nicely. If I use this single sheet of paper, then I still have to bring something solid to write on, no? That's why I was thinking about buying one of those little notebooks. But on the other hand, the sheet is nice because it has the exercises already written down....

You need to open file with Excel then before print change to landscape and scale down to one sheet or you could use Microsoft Works Spreadsheet. The exercises is what I'm doing right now you can change exercises every 6-8 weeks
to your personal taste.

Here is a link for Microsoft Works Spreadsheet.

Landscape? No way will it all fit on there in that orientation. I removed a bunch of the notes except for the actual log part and got it to fit as portrait so it will print out on one page.
