Very sore forearms and hands

Postby Supercompact on Thu Jul 02, 2009 3:15 am

I have been doing THT for about 6 weeks now and after any exercise that requires a reasonable amount of grip, I have extemely sore forearms for several days. Especially after biceps day. This pain starts on the inside of my forearm about 4 inches toward the hand from my elbow. There are also some jolts of pain that shoot into my hands and into my fingers when the pain is more intense. Sometimes it is difficult to release the bar immediately after doing a set because it is painful to let go initially. I have tried wrist straps, topical creams, ibuprofen, and light weight forearm exercises to combat this. Because the pain becomes so intense, I haven't been able to complete the final sets of my biceps workouts for the past two weeks. It is really irritating and discouraging when this happens. I have read that it could be tendonosis or tendonitis. With so much misinformation on the web, I don't know what to think. I'm not sure what to do as I definitely don't want to halt my weight training now that I seem to be getting stronger and showing some improvement. I am 32 years old, 6' 1" and 206 lbs. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I had this happen to me for a short period of time as well. In my case it happened after I started doing deadlifts and wasn't using gloves or straps, the slipping grip would cause way too much tendon stress.

Unfortunately its not going to go away unless you lay off it a bit. Don't let it get you down though, you can still do lower body and abs full throttle and even chest, triceps, and shoulder workouts probably won't give you much trouble either. Mainly you need to lighten up the weight for any back and bicep (pulling) exercises or avoid them altogether for a period of time until you are feeling up to it again.

I'll give that a shot. I'll skip those workouts for a couple of weeks and only do the exercises that don't require tons of stress on the grip. Do you guys think I should continue to do very light weight forearm curls to strengthen that area or just lay off all together?

I just wanted to add that Aspercreme seems to greatly reduce the pain. I have been applying it after other workouts that only tax the forearms slightly and it seems to be working. The real test will be when I go back to curls.

Lay off those exercises. You won't lose any significant muscle in 2-3 weeks. You'll progress much faster by letting it heal too, otherwise you're just delaying the inevitable. I don't know that particular brand of creme but I have a diclophenac-based cream which I get over the counter which is awesome for isolated pain like that.
