Weight Gain with exercise???

Postby BabyDoll1975 on Thu Jun 23, 2011 12:03 pm

It is normal for me to fluctuate and have a pound or even 2 - 3 pound weight gain on the scale the day after a cardio work out. My question is related to the weight training. First session was the 15th of June . I am doing 45-50 minute weight training sessions, 3 sets of every exercise I do with minimal down time between each, every other day with my cardio on opposite days.

Since the 15th the scale went up 5 pounds for about 2 to 3 days, then down to 4, etc etc, and this morning 8 days since starting my weight training endeavor, it is still up 1 pound.

My question is how long before the scale starts going down again? I know I couldn't have gained muscle mass already in only 8 days, but do know that the muscles worked do tend to swell and retain fluid...

As a reminder I do lower fat/low carb Atkins type diet on top of the every other day weight training, every other day cardio... (the cardio I started May 16th every other day and was loosing quite steadily until adding the weight training).

Thanks in advance for your advice.

8 views no responses..does this mean I am abnormal and this has not happened to anyone else? I try not to be a slave to the scale but its starting to irritate me ....

Day to day fluctuations are normal. Measure weekly by scale and caliper for better accuracy.

Thank you for the reassurance. I have just never had it go up so long before and so far and I knew there was no way I was putting muscle on that fast. It was just really scary for me. I appreciate your response and will just continue to stick with it. Maybe I should hide my scale in the closet. ;) Thanks Again.

Hi babydoll,

I take it you are trying to lose weight thus the reason for the cardio + weights training. Always remember to weigh yourself first thing in the morning and never twice on the same day! So one morning weigh yourself then 1 week later in the morning repeat this.

The reason I say morning is that most people can actually gain pounds during the day due to eating drinking ect, you will always be heavier at night than in the morning, so morning will give you a true weight and you can work from there.

If your diet is correct then with all the exercise you are doing the pounds will fall off!

I tend to say this, don't worry what the scales say but only how you feel and look in your best clothes, if you feel good then you look good!

Good luck
